Park Rapids Area Fishing Report

Fishing activity in the Park Rapids area has been more consistent in the past few days compared to early season success.

Walleye
Walleyes have been very active on some of the larger lakes in the area whose water temperatures have warmed into the mid 70-degree mark.  Big fish, as well as strong numbers of walleye, have been coming from deep water, 20-28 feet on crawlers and leeches.
Northern Pike and Muskies
Northern pike and muskies continue to strike along shallow to mid-depth weedlines, though larger pike are inhabiting the same depths as the walleye, though in somewhat different underwater environments.  The presence of baitfish is key in locating these deep water predators, which can only be accomplished with the aid of sonar electronics. Minnows and deep-diving crankbaits are the best producers for the pike.  The monster muskies are also following that same pattern, though much larger gear should be used to land one of those trophies.
Bass
Largemouth bass activity has been strong, though smallmouth action has slowed somewhat.  Shallow and medial depth weedlines have been the most attractive areas for bass.  Soft plastic baits are definitely the best right now, such as Northland Tackles Jungle Hog.
Panfish
Crappies and bluegills are very active on the mid-depth weed edges.  Black 1/16th ounce jigs tossed into 10-16 feet of water are sure to get bit.  Concentrate your angling in the morning and evening hours to catch more crappie, but fish all day long for the bluegills.
